I am a bit of a web programming masochist, but not* to the point where I'd like to write an entire short novel's worth of text in the Neocities source code editor. So, this is how I write my story in a separate writing tool, export it as HTML, and then add it to this site.
- I use the web-based writing tool Ellipsus because I like the themes it has, as well as its ability to export directly as HTML.
- You can import Google Docs files into Ellipsus, by the way.
- Get a webpage set up with all of the basic boilerplate code.
- Neocities does this for you automatically, but you'll probably want to use a dedicated theme. Just have a page ready before you copy the HTML in the next step.
- You can use the theme on this site if you like.
- I also have another theme with a more step by step tutorial for beginners.
- To export as HTML from Ellipsus, go to the "Share and Export" tab in the menu on the right.
- Under Export, click "Copy as", and choose "HTML".
- Paste that code somewhere within the body tags of your webpage. Many themes also have special containers within the body tag (like "main" or "div class="container") where text should go.
- Hit save, and then view.
- VoilĂ ! Your story now has its own home on the web.
Unfortunately, this is all easier said than done if you're new to web programming, but you can follow these resources if you need more help:
- Watch Kevin Powell's Intro to HTML/CSS video series.
- Use W3School's Introduction to HTML & CSS interactive series.
- Look up or ask a question on Stack Overflow.
*Well, at this point, I've probably already written a short novel's worth of text on here... with all of the blog posts and tutorials and pages I've made...
